Prisma Health Children's Hospital–Midlands Special Care Center

Medically complex children often need multiple medications and special equipment to stay healthy, such as feeding tubes, oxygen and ventilators. They often receive care from multiple specialists, dietitians, therapists, nurses and community organizations. Some children will need help with movement, dressing, learning and other everyday activities. 

Being a medical home means we review growth, milestones, labs, and immunizations. We are there with every new change your child is going through. We see our patients regularly and provide same-day sick appointments. 

To help coordinate this complex care, our team offers:

Time

• You can expect us to take plenty of time to address your concerns, prescribe medications, make referrals, review changes in your child’s health and make decisions together. 

Experience

• Our doctors are experienced in caring for children with complex medical and equipment needs.

Familiar faces

• You can expect to see a familiar face at every visit. Your child will see the same doctor at their scheduled visits and most sick visits. This routine will help you and your child feel secure and at ease.

Because we are limited in the number of patients we can serve at the Special Care Center, we have two requests for referrals:

Patients must be medically complex

Most of our patients have multiple medical specialists, gastrostomy tubes, tracheostomy tubes and/or a ventilator. We loosely follow the criteria for the Medically Complex Children’s Waiver, or ccmparable Medicaid waiver through the Department for Disabilities or Special Needs. If you are unsure if your child or patient qualifies, please call our office.

Patient’s families want to come

To provide quality care, we generally see our patients at least quarterly for office visits.

Please contact us directly with questions regarding eligibility. We review patients individually to assess the appropriateness of our clinic in meeting your child’s needs. Once approved, families can contact our office directly to schedule initial appointments. 

Patients are responsible for understanding insurance coverage benefits. Please verify that we are listed as approved providers prior to scheduling your appointment with us.
