Children's Emergency Center

Prisma Health Children's Hospital–Upstate

For immediate emergency assistance, dial 911.

The Prisma Health Children’s Emergency Center (CEC) in Greenville, South Carolina, cares for children with a serious illness or injury who cannot wait to be seen by their regular doctor (or have been referred by their doctor for an emergent condition).

Child-friendly emergency care

It is a separate facility for children from birth to 17 years of age staffed by pediatric emergency trained physicians, nurses, technicians and child life specialists.

The CEC is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Upstate’s only dedicated Children’s Emergency Center treats approximately 28,000 children each year. If admitted, patients receive the highest level of pediatric care in the region at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate, which includes a Level III (advanced level) neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit.

The center’s equipment is designed for a child’s smaller body, with breathing tubes, IV lines and other vital supplies in a variety of pediatric sizes. And it offers a child-friendly environment with a jungle-themed décor.

Our team

Every team member is specially trained in pediatric care, approaching emergency care through the eyes of a child. We are sensitive to the needs of children and their families, and at all times will strive to make you and your child as comfortable as possible. We are here for your child and for any concerns you or your child may have about their illness, injury, treatments or surgery.

Child life specialists play an important role in the CEC. They’re trained to ease children’s fears with “medical play” that shows how upcoming procedures will work and to coach children in relaxation/distraction techniques.
